My illustrations for Once Upon A Town are digital although I try and retain parts of the aesthetic of traditional methods by incorporating interesting textures. I was excited to be part of this project because it is important that we all understand our heritage and appreciate the story that makes us who we are, and that feeds into our individuality. Ormskirk has a varied history and unique features so I made a decision at the start to keep the illustrations lively and playful, but with an ethereal sense of the past. I did this by layering solid and transparent objects, textures and shadows to symbolise change. In the case of Orme the Viking, I used shape and colour to create contrasts with tension to draw upon the descriptions and accounts of his character.
